Cognition hires Snowflake's first sales hire as CRO: the signal that Devin is going enterprise

Chris joined Snowflake as its first sales hire. Over the next decade, he scaled alongside the company and grew into Snowflake's CRO, driving over $3B in revenue.

On September 30, Cognition announced that Chris Degnan has joined as Chief Revenue Officer to “help us scale globally and build the future of software.” Degnan spent over a decade at Snowflake, joining as its first sales hire in 2013 and rising to CRO, where he drove the company past $3 billion in revenue.

For a company that crossed $1 billion ARR five days earlier, hiring Snowflake’s first sales rep is a clear signal: Cognition is going enterprise, and it’s hiring the executive who wrote the playbook for selling data infrastructure to Fortune 500 companies.

Why this hire matters

AI coding tools have historically sold themselves. GitHub Copilot went bottom-up through developers. Cursor and Windsurf grew via word-of-mouth in engineering communities. Cognition’s Devin started the same way — individual engineers trying it, teams adopting it, and usage spreading.

But by mid-2026, Cognition’s customer base included Mercedes-Benz, Citi, and Goldman Sachs. At that scale, the sale isn’t just bottom-up anymore. Engineering VPs need ROI analyses. Procurement wants security audits. Legal needs SLAs and liability caps. That’s enterprise sales — and enterprise sales needs a team that speaks CFO, not just CTO.

Degnan built that team at Snowflake. When he joined in 2013, Snowflake was a Series A startup with a data warehouse no one had heard of. By the time it IPO’d in 2020, it was the largest software IPO in history, and Degnan was CRO. His LinkedIn shows stints at Salesforce and NetSuite before Snowflake — places where enterprise sales is a science, not a hustle.

What Cognition is building toward

The timing is deliberate. Cognition’s $1 billion Series D in May 2026 (at a $26 billion valuation) was marketed as growth capital, not R&D capital. The company told investors it would use the funding to “scale go-to-market operations and accelerate international expansion,” per TechCrunch’s reporting. Hiring a CRO six months later is the execution of that plan.

Degnan’s first mandate is likely global expansion. Devin is live in the U.S. and parts of Europe, but international enterprise sales — especially in regulated industries like finance and healthcare — require local teams, compliance certifications, and region-specific pricing. Snowflake’s playbook was to enter a market with a sales leader who already knew the accounts. Cognition is likely doing the same.

The second mandate is multi-product monetization. Cognition now has three surfaces: Devin Cloud, Devin Desktop, and Devin CLI. Each has different pricing, different buyers, and different expansion motions. Cloud sells to engineering managers who want agents-as-a-service. Desktop sells to individual developers who want local control. CLI sells to DevOps teams who want to script agent workflows. A CRO’s job is to package those three SKUs into one enterprise deal that lands all three.

The competitor response

Cognition isn’t the only AI coding company hiring enterprise sales talent. Cursor (now owned by SpaceX) hired former GitHub VP of Sales Erica Brescia in July 2026, per SpaceX’s acquisition announcement. Windsurf (now Devin Desktop post-acquisition) had its own enterprise team pre-acquisition, which Cognition absorbed. GitHub Copilot has Microsoft’s entire enterprise sales force behind it.

The difference is execution speed. Degnan isn’t coming in to build a sales team from scratch — he’s the guy who has already done this at a company that went from Series A to the largest software IPO ever. If Cognition wants to hit $5 billion ARR by 2028 (a target Bloomberg reported in August 2026), hiring Snowflake’s first sales hire is the fastest way to get there.

Method: Chris Degnan's appointment and Snowflake tenure are from Cognition's September 30 X announcement. The $1B Series D and $26B valuation are from TechCrunch's May 2026 reporting. Customer names (Mercedes-Benz, Citi, Goldman Sachs) are from Cognition's September 25 ARR announcement video. The $5B ARR target is from Bloomberg's August 2026 report on Cognition's funding talks. Erica Brescia's hire at Cursor is from SpaceX's July 2026 acquisition announcement.
