Windsurf is Devin Desktop now — and Cascade’s July runway is the real deadline

The OTA rename is branding. The July Cascade runway is operations.

Community tipoffs flooded Social Wire this week with one question: did Cognition just rename Windsurf, or did they change how you run local agents? The official answer is both — and only one half is urgent.

What June 2 actually shipped

Cognition’s Devin Desktop FAQ is blunt: on June 2, 2026, Windsurf becomes Devin Desktop via a normal over-the-air update. Same IDE, extensions, keybindings, workflows, and plans. Pricing does not change. Windsurf settings port automatically.

What does change is the default surface. Scott Wu and Jeff Wang’s announcement frames the shift: the Agent Command Center — Spaces, Kanban, local and cloud sessions together — moves to the front. Cognition’s own words: they expect developers to spend most of the day managing teams of agents, not only editing one buffer.

Cascade through July — Local is the successor path

Official FAQ: Cascade remains available through July. Tipoff coverage (ChatForest builder log, Tech with RKM’s walkthrough) often rounds that to a July 1 cliff. Treat the FAQ language as the bound you can publish; treat tipoff calendars as operational stress tests.

Devin Local is documented as the next harness: same architecture as Devin CLI, meant to eventually replace Cascade as the primary local agent. It is still in preview, with documented gaps vs Cascade (memories, workflows, and other IDE-native features — see Local limitations). It is not supported in the JetBrains plugin for Devin Desktop.

What Cognition claims for Local vs Cascade, in the docs: up to ~30% fewer tokens on comparable work, subagents, and OS-level sandboxing (filesystem scopes + network allow/deny). Admins can disable Cascade with devin.cascade.enabled; Local visibility is controlled from settings / team gates on Enterprise.

ACP — third-party agents on the same Kanban

Devin Desktop’s Agent Client Protocol docs confirm what tipoffs hyped: third-party ACP agents (Codex CLI, Claude Agent, OpenCode, Junie, Gemini CLI, and custom agents) can run inside the Agent Command Center. Cognition’s Desktop blog pitches the same openness: best model and best agent for the job, managed from one surface.

Caveats from the docs, not the tipoffs: ACP agents are called out for Pro / Max / Teams (Enterprise asks the account team); when you run an external ACP agent, that provider’s privacy, legal, and billing apply — not Devin Desktop’s.

Close the laptop with /handoff

If CLI is your daily driver, the Japanese StartDevin write-up on Qiita is a good tipoff into documented behavior: CLI /handoff packages conversation context, branch, and uncommitted work into a fresh cloud VM so the job continues after you shut the lid. Cognition’s when-to-use guidance already points CLI users at handoff for VM, browser, CI/CD, long jobs, and parallel cloud work.
